In late 2019 and early 2020 I worked with a wonderful team of South Australian Sewing Guild members to create a brochure for the 2020 Australian Sewing Guild Convention that was to be held in Adelaide. We were all very enthusiastic volunteers.

I was asked to help out as I had previously been the newsletter editor for the South Australian Sewing Guild, and later on for the National Sewing Guild. Both of these roles required me to take content from various sources and put them together to create a PDF file for distribution to members.

The brochure was to promote the location of the Convention – Glenelg beach near Adelaide, the Adelaide Fabric Shop Tour, the Adelaide Cultural Tour, the various workshops and their talented tutors, and the Gala Dinner where attendees are invited to dress formally in their own creations. As well as being informative and promotional it needed to be pleasing to the eye and get people excited about coming to the convention. Something that only happens every two years.

Brochure Techinicalities

The brochure was very similar to what I had done in the past newsletters but this time I used InDesign rather than Scribus, as the desktop publishing software. Previous convention brochures had been created in InDesign and there was more experience from board members using this software. This meant there was a bit of a learning curve, but not quite as severe as when I first learnt about Scribus, as there are quite a few similarities.

The brochure was created in landscape mode, just like previous brochures, as there is a page listing all the workshops and it is best laid out horizontally. I used the colours from the Australian Sewing Guild which has a primary colour of purple (#71297a) and secondary colour of turquoise/teal (#00759b). Rounded corners were used throughout the brochure, with the exception of the Gala Dinner page. It was requested that it looked like an invitation, so I took on the inspiration of wedding invites and used the Inverse Rounded border.

Links were used thoughtfully throughout the brochure. Each footer had a link back to the Table of Contents, which included each page or section as a link. Pages that referred to making a booking a link was added in the footer so it was simple for those interested to easily go to the booking website. The Workshop schedule page had links to tutors and workshops to make it easier to navigate the document.

You are free to Download the Brochure. And if you are at all interested in sewing and want to learn something new please consider coming to the convention. I am actually teaching a Denim Tote Bag workshop on Wednesday 14th October 2020 so please join me.
