I recently heard about the Make Nine Challenge on the first Love to Sew podcast for 2018 (Episode 22: New Year’s Re-Sew-Lutions). It was set up by Lucky Lucille a few years ago to share 9 projects on Instagram that she wanted to do in the upcoming year. All details about her 2018 Make Nine can be found here.
This challenge sounded perfect as my 2018 sewing goal is to sew 60 items and 60 charity items. I also want to get more familiar with Instagram, something that I’ve been putting off for a while, so this will be the perfect solution. In 2017 I made 41 items and 38 charity items, so my 2018 goal is definitely going to stretch me. I’m hoping this challenge will ensure that I do sew more, but more importantly some things for myself which I don’t do enough of.
My Make Nine challenge entry is:
These patterns were chosen due to some wardrobe requirements, but the main focus was to use patterns I already had in my stash. There are only two patterns I don’t own (yet!), the Ginger Jeans (top left) and the Kelly Anorak (top middle), and that’s because I don’t own any sort of jeans or anorak patterns. Of the seven I own I have never sewn five of them (Kwik Sew 3678, New Look 6343, Simplicity 1613, Simplicity 4032 and Vogue 8793) and rather than buy more I thought it was about time I tried them out.
1. Closet Case – Ginger Jeans (Reviews)
I have been wanting to create my own jeans for a while and I even asked on the Australian Sewing Advice & Inspiration Facebook group last year for some pattern suggestions and the Ginger Jeans was mentioned a few times. So after a bit of research and reviewing of the top patterns for 2016 on Pattern Review (2017 hadn’t been released yet) I thought the Ginger Jeans would be a good pattern to try out.
2. Closet Case – Kelly Anorak (Reviews)
I have never made an anorak before, but I definitely have a need for one in my wardrobe. I bought a Gortex jacket years ago when they were on special at Kathmandu but the only problem is it’s cream/beige which is great when I go for my early morning walk and drivers can see me in the rain, but it really isn’t my colour. So I’d like to try something in red or grey. I’ll see what fabric I can find.
3. Kwik Sew 3678 Tracksuit (Reviews)
I walk every morning so I need to have the appropriate attire to keep me comfortable, so a new jacket and pants are just what I need. I will likely add side pockets to the pants because I just love my pockets for keys, tissues, phone, etc.
4. Kwik Sew 4144 Pyjama Set(Reviews)
I made the whole set a few years ago with the top and pant in a navy knit and the dressing gown in a paisley blue, pink, white and grey rayon and I have worn it over and over. I even entered it in the dressmaking section of the Royal Adelaide Show and got a first place. The pants I found were so comfortable that I made a couple of pairs in a navy cotton broadcloth to wear during the day.
5. New Look 6343 Top (Reviews)
I loved this pattern when I first saw it in a pattern book in Spotlight. The armhole looks interesting and it has so many different options to make it look more than just a basic TShirt.
6. Simplicity 1613 Knit Top (Reviews)
I’m looking forward to tackling this one, especially view A with the Criss Cross neckline. I’ll need to take a close look at the pattern piece but I think it will look interesting in a stripe.
7. Simplicity 4032 Jacket(Reviews)
I definitely need some more jackets and View A (in green) with a bow on the lapel looks so interesting. I was thinking of trying this in a boiled wool as I’ve never used the fabric before and I think it would work perfectly for this pattern.
8. Simplicity 2365 Shirt (Review)
This is my tried and true pattern. I have sewn it up three times already and I love it. One of my shirts that I made it up in finally had to be thrown out when the fabric wore out so much that it ripped when I put it on one morning. It’s a shame that the shirt is no longer available for purchase because it is such a comfortable shirt to wear in the hot Australian summer.
9. Vogue 8793 Knit Top (Reviews)
Another pattern that I haven’t tried out yet. I like the neckline detail using zippers and the contrasting colour sections demonstrated in the photos. Another TShirt pattern that will look anything but ordinary.
At this stage I have already cut out Simplicity 2365 so it won’t be long before I start ticking off the items on my #2018MakeNine list. I’ll be showing my progress on my Instagram account so please check it out and give me some encouragement. And I’ll regularly be looking at what others have created on the #2018MakeNine hashtag.
