The night before my son had his school’s disco he asked me “Can you make me a top for tomorrow’s disco? It has to have a disco ball.” And of course I said “Sure, I can do that!”
Being known for my sewing skills he thought I could quickly whip up something, but I do take a while to get my projects started and finished. The only option was to cheat a bit and buy a plain jumper and add a Disco ball to it, and this is how I did it.
Supplies
Plain Black Hoodie (Big W for AU$8)
Gold Disco necklace (Big W for AU$4)
30cm Silver Disco Sequin Fabric (Spotlight for AU$15/m)
Steps
- Use something round like a plate of the right size to trace a circle on the silver disco sequin fabric. Cut out the disco ball.
- If sequin fabric looks like it will fray (like mine did) cover it entirely with Fray Stoppa or Fray Check. Wait until it dries, or speed up the process with a hair dryer before proceeding.
- Place disco ball fabric onto jumper in appropriate position.
- Place something hard inside the jumper, like a ruler or cutting mat, as you will be hand stitching the disco ball to the jumper and you don’t want to stitch it to the back of the jumper.
- Using black thread hand sew with either a running stitch or back stitch about 1cm in from the edge of the disco ball to secure it to the jumper.
- Remove the strap from the Gold Disco necklace.
- Place the Disco plaque into the centre of the Disco ball and hand stitch the loops to the jumper.
I also added some so called “glow-in-the-dark” star stickers for extra affect, but unfortunately they didn’t glow. Anyway, my son loved it and had a great time at the disco.
Only issue is that in order to wash it the Disco plaque needs to be removed by cutting the threads as I think the gold plating will come off the plastic. If anyone has an idea on how it could be made easily removable I’d love to hear about it! For the meantime it has gone unwashed.
