Having a bit of a late start to #MakeNine for 2020, but who says you need to start on the 1st of January!
This is my third year of participating in the Make Nine challenge. See my previous years:
#MakeNine2018 (Result)
#MakeNine2019 (Result)
In 2020 I want to focus on slow sewing. I don’t need to create a lot of clothes, but I want them to be well loved and make me feel confident and proud of what I’ve made. So no more cheap fabrics. No more fabric purchases that don’t have an intended project. I want to love my fabric even if it makes my eyes water at it’s cost. I’m worth it!
My #MakeNine2020 is:
1. Alabama Chanin inpired TShirt
I have done a lot of reading and watching of the Alabama Chanin style of stitching. Created by Natalie Chanin it is a method of embroidery on garments that make them really stand out. I’ve watched some of her BluPrint videos and I just feel calm and relaxed listening and watching her, and I don’t even have a needle and thread in my hand.
2. Closet Case – Kelly Anorak (Reviews)
I made my first Kelly Anorak in 2019 and I love it! This time round I want to create a waterproof version to replace my purchased Kathmandu jacket that just makes me so sweaty and sticky. In Adelaide, Australia our Winters get as low as 10C, which isn’t very cold so I need something to protect me from the rain during my walks or school pickups but something that breathes a bit more. I’m hoping I can find such a fabric.
3. Cloth Habit – Watson Bra (Reviews)
The Watson Bra was on my #MakeNine2019 list and I didn’t get around to it. This year I really want to give it a go. I have to buy bras that don’t have underwires that irritates my scar from having lymph nodes removed from my armpit during breast cancer treatment. There are not a lot of wire free options available in the shops, so making my own will make it totally customisable.
4. Vogue 8804 – Chanel Style Jacket (Reviews)
I am joining The Australian Sewing Guild’s Couture Cardigan Jacket sew-along. They are using Vogue 8804. You can use other patterns but I thought I’d make it easy on myself and follow along exactly as this is my first attempt at a cardigan jacket.
I’ve never really stuck with sew-alongs so I’ll do my best to keep up. There are a few ladies in my Sewing Guild group who are also participating, so that should be a great motivator.
5. Seamwork – Audrey Denim Jacket (Reviews)
I’ve been seeing denim jackets a lot lately, so I thought I’d make one. A few years ago I made a denim jacket style with black corduroy. Even though I spent quite a bit of time on making it with bound seams I haven’t worn it much. It isn’t a very long jacket, finishing just below my waist. I prefer jackets that finish on my hip (hiding my butt). The Audrey Denim Jacket appears to sit lower on the hip, but I’ll be making some adjustments if I need to.
6. Seamwork – Prudence Dress
In October this year I will be attending the Gala Dinner for the Australian Sewing Guild Convention that is being held in Adelaide. This is a formal occasion, so what better way to show what I can create than by going out of my comfort zone and creating a formal outfit. Still not decided on a final outfit but I like the look of the Prudence Dress that covers my upper arms and is down to the ankles. I don’t wear skirts or dresses very often (only for weddings, funerals and back when I did ballroom dancing) so this will be a challenge, even to wear.
7. Stitch Upon a Time – Bunzies (Reviews)
The Bunzie undies were on my #MakeNine2019 list but I never got around to making them up. I did buy some knicker elastic in 2019 so the buying of supplies has started, now need to take next step and find some fabric to use.
8. New Look 6374 – Tunic (Reviews)
I bought this pattern in 2019 when they were only $6 at Spotlight. I am a big fan of pop over the head tunics without a collar. And I also loved the rolled up sleeve look. I need some more light summery tops that drape beautifully.
9. Leather Tote
In 2019 I did a one-day workshop with Yvonne Twining to make a leather satchel bag. This was quite a small bag that would fit a phone, purse, tissues, and not much else. Now this isn’t really my size of bag and I’ve never used it, as I like to hold my rather large drink bottle, notebook, pens, etc. I only did the workshop to learn more about sewing with leather, and the result was that’s it’s not as hard as it looks!
Fortunately Yvonne is doing another workshop this year. Over 2 days she will teach us how to make a Leather Tote bag. This is more my style and would be definitely something I would use.
Now I’ve decided on the patterns/styles, it’s on to purchasing fabric and sewing these up!
