Vogue 9067

For summer I needed some comfortable lightweight pants. I have had Vogue 9067 in my stash for a few years and I’ve never used it before so I thought it was time to try it out. I choose View E which has an elastic waistband, tapered leg and side pockets. I bought some black rayon from Spotlight that felt so nice to touch that I thought would be perfect for Australian summer days. The only other requirement was some 2cm wide non-roll elastic for the waistband that I had in the stash from KnitWit.

My measurements fell between an XL and XXL so I went with an XL and added a total of 4cm to the hips and 2cm to the thighs. I also added 2cm to the centre back and removed 3cm from the centre front, which is my usual adjustment to pants patterns to cater for my full derriere.

I wanted 7/8 pants so I reduced the length by 5cm to fit my 5″6′ height, so that they sit just below the fuller part of my calf.

The pants came with inseam pockets but I also wanted back pockets, as I always seem to need them to slip a note or the shopping list into. I used the back pockets from my Closet Case Ginger Jeans pattern and they seemed to suit the fabric and pattern quite nicely. But placing them was another issue. I am quite curved in this area so when I’m wearing them the pocket gaps open a bit. Next time I’ll need to do some research in how to compensate.

I have worn these pants a number of times over the last few weeks, and one discovery I have made is that this rayon fabric frays a lot! For the hem I did a double fold and handstitched it closed but after the first wash there were loose threads escaping between my hand stitching.

The same thing occurred for the back pockets. The three sides that I attached to the pants I had just folded over the edges and sewn two lines of stitching, like I did for the ginger jeans. And sure enough after a wash there were loose threads.

When I use rayon again I’ll have to remember to overlock all edges, even those that I think will be enclosed.
