Have you ever thought about why you sew?

It’s an interesting one.

We all come to sewing from different experiences.

You could have learnt at school and were instantly in love? Or did you want to create a unique outfit that wasn’t available to buy at the shops?

Whatever the journey we keep coming back to it.

But if you have fallen out of love with sewing or just need to tell those around you that you just have to sew,  here are 5 reasons why you should sew.

1. Sustainability

When you sew, you choose what you use. That is the fabric, the zips, the buttons, the elastic, etc.

Fabric options are always changing, with some better for the environment than others. You get to decide what you use and more importantly, what you don’t use.

It doesn’t even have to be new fabric or trims either. It could be taking an item of clothing, curtains or sheets and transforming them into something new. Keeping them out of landfill and giving it another life.

You will appreciate the item more due to the time it took for you to create. So you will care for it and mend it when needed, so you can use it for as long as possible.

2. Improved Body Identity

Sewing can sometimes make you uncomfortable with your body – ah, those measurements don’t sound good. But when was the last time you could buy something from the shops that fit you perfectly?

When you sew something for YOUR body and make it fit YOU, you will always look and feel better. Yes, fitting is a difficult skill and one that you will continue to develop, but it has to be an improvement on what you can buy in a store.

And when it’s something you have sewn for yourself, it gives you that extra boost in confidence.

3. Brain Health

Sewing helps your brain in many ways.

It reduces stress and anxiety by focusing your attention on what you are doing, whether it’s cutting, pressing or sewing. Putting your worries and concerns to the back of your mind while you are totally present on the task at hand.

Due to the repetitive nature, it is also meditative, keeping you calm and relaxed. So its perfect after a busy day to do a bit of sewing to recentre yourself.

Sewing is also a challenge for your brain. From hand-eye coordination to understanding instructions and remembering how to do a certain technique. This can stimulate brain growth and improve your memory.

4. Self Expression

Sewing is a fantastic way to show your creativity and self-expression. You are unique and how you present to the world is also unique.

One way to show that is through your clothing, your accessories, your home, your environment, etc. And you can use your sewing skills to do just that by communicating your ideas, your emotions and your opinions to the world.

5. You can say “I made it!”

Isn’t that the best feeling about sewing, when you can say to others, or even just to yourself “I made it!”

Sewing is an underrated skill. It takes time and patience to learn and develop. When you begin not everything looks fantastic, but as you progress, things get better and before you know it you are tackling difficult projects that you never felt were possible.

These are just a few reasons on why you should sew, please leave a comment below on why you sew, I’d love to hear them.
